Firstborn or firstborns

Hi. Please help. Could it be the word "firstborns" instead of the word "firstborn"?

the firstborn of the people/animals

I think we normally write "the eldest sons of the people," and not "the eldest son of the people."

Yes, you could, but to me, it sounds more natural as a singular/plural with the same form, 'firstborn'. It would be clearer to use the adjective: The firstborn children of the people. My firstborn child.
