first vs. the first

In the following sentence, can I also use "the first" instead of "first"?

If I can, is still there any difference of nuance?

And if there is, can you tell me what it is with an example?

* This was an ancient "health food" and was probably first made by nomadic tribes.

I think... This was an ancient "health food" and was probably first made by nomadic tribes. In this sentence "first" refers to who made the first "health food", and it was probably nomadic tribes, not the Romans.
