First time I saw vs I had seen? What's the difference?

That was the first time in my life ................. Donald Trump , and the last, I suspect.

That was the first time in my life ................. the Queen in flesh.


I picked as a 'correct' answer "I saw" in both cases. Is it correct? What's the difference between these two?
