Thanks for your response to my post.

I didn't get the example given in the meaning of 'leeway' in this sentence. What does first thing mean here? Secondly, paper mean an assignment?

'If you know you have a paper due on Monday, you might ask your teachers if there is any leeway––could you, say, bring it first thing Tuesday morning?'
