or

In non-jargon English, I'd say
first climbed

To me, "first climbed" or "first ascended" does not necessarily imply that the summit was reached.

khoffTo me, "first climbed" or "first ascended" does not necessarily imply that the summit was reached.
If I read "Percival Postule was the first man to climb Mount Eruptus", I assume that he reached the summit.
