'first started' - good style?

Hi all

I was just wondering if it is considered good style to say 'first started'. I don't know if this amounts to the redundancy seen in phrases like 'for free'.

The context is, 'When Leah first started being part of the team, she had difficulty in getting her ideas heard'.

Also, while we're at this, should I have written '...started to be part of...' instead? And we don't say 'she is a part of the team' because 'part' here is uncountable, is that correct?

Thank you

I don't object to "first started" because it emphasizes that it's the VERY beginning, but I don't really like "First started being."

What about "When Leah first became a member of the team...."?
