First Question here

first of all ,i'm sorry if i have mistakes...
i'll try to express my self as better i could...
when i say: i've got this thing...
for an example, someone's asking me to go to someplace with him,and i can't so i say ,i've got this thing...
my question is why do i have to use "have" between i and got,why can't i just say "i got this thing"?

madivga why can't i just say "i got this thing"? If you just say "I got", it means "I received". It means something happened in the past.
