First name pronunciation

0 My first name is spelled Jolyon. I have been unsure of how to pronounce it all my life. Throughout the years I have heard several variations, but I would ideally like to determine the "correct" form - or at least the most agreed upon version. I believe the name is of British origin, perhaps similar to Julian. I wondered if it should have 2 syllables, as in "jol-yen", or 3 as in "jo-le-en" or "jo-le-un". Typically, when someone asks me how to say my name, I admit that I do not know the correct way, and go by whatever is easiest for that particular person to say; I sort of adopted a version that slurs the first part to "jole" and tack on "yon" (like the word yawn) but, again, have no idea if this is preferred. A lot of folks back in high school would avoid the whole thing and just use Jolly as my nickname. 02br

0 Hey whats up. My name is also Jolyon and I've had the same problem. I havent known exactly how to pronounce it. My mother got the name from The Forsyte Saga, a book that also became a television series in England. Undoubtedly it is related to Julian, which - believe it or not, is an Italian name for a boy. Jolyon is the *** variant of Julian. But...who cares about Italy. 02br

when I was younger I used to introduce myself as jol at parties and such...and dreaded having to explain my name to teachers at roll call and the like.

anyway now I'm a bit older and really enjoy having a unique name.

as for the pronunciation..i always used jol-ee-on. My mum named me from the BBC drama the Forsyte Saga...so I guess she got the p

I am just passing through this site searching for something else really (Yahoo's useless) and I came across this.

My father is in fact a Phonetician and as this name contains a J and a Y the correct pronunciation of Jolyon would be Joll (as in Jolly) and yon (as in yonder).

Etymologically it comes from Pig Latin -Jo- (is) -L- (next) -Yo<rah>-

0This is a neat site, I found it by accident. My name is Antonio and I named my son Julian as an Italian name. Many question this name and also that it is or is not Italian. I was glad to see some posts here to verify that it is Latin. I think the name Jolyon is very unique and I personally think you should embrace that. Well, my two cents anyway. Take care 050010id1

Since your father is a Phonetician, can you tell me what is the correct pronunciation for my daughter's name. Her name is Melia. We pronounce is Me-la with the i being silent, however her father is having grief with the "i" and what to remove it since most people usually say Me-li-a.
