First man to

1. "He is the first man to climb Mt Everest."

2. "He was the first man to climb Mt Everest."

Do these sentences have different meanings or they mean the same ?

Maybe in #1 he's still alive at the moment of speaking, whereas in #2 he's dead. Not sure if this is correct though. - DJB -

Maybe in #1 he's still alive at the moment of speaking, whereas in #2 he's dead.

Not sure if this is correct though.
