Dear teachers,

Are “first / last” adjectives, adverbs ?

1) I came in first this semester.
2) I came first on the first day of class.
3) The first thing I do when I come home is…

How should I know which parts of speech first/last belong to?

on question 1 I think adverb " first " modifes adverb " in "

on question 2 I think adverb " first " modfies verb "came " I dont think it modifies the prepsotional phrase though sometimes adverb can also modife it.

on question 3 the determiner adjective " first " modifies the noun " thing.
