Is there a difference between these two?

When people first found CDs in record shops, they had no idea what they were.
When people found CDs in record shops for the first time, they had no idea what they were.

They are essentially the same. For the first time could indicate that it was on only one occasion (per person) that there was confusion. First is a little more general.
