Fir/spruce

Hello teachers!
Can you tell me please?
It was written that 'fir' and 'spruce' have the same meanings in the dictionary, But they are different! Then why was it in the dictionary? For example, I see a tree in the street and say: "Look, guys, there's a beautiful fir!" or "Look, guys, there's a beautiful spruce!" Would it be different or not?
Thanks.

Unless you are a botanist or serious gardener, you will not be able to recognize the difference; many laymen use 'fir' very generically, referring to virtually any tall conifer.
