Fire vs shoot

Dear users,

I have come across the following sentence:

The soldier ..... his gun at the enemy.

The key says that fired works in this context but shot does not. I do not understand why. Could you please help me?

The key is wrong. While 'fired' is more commonly used, there is nothing grammatically wrong with 'shot'.
