??? fire (I´m searching for an adjective.)

What’s the word when you are not putting any more wood in the fire so it’s “weakening” on the way to burn up. To put it into a sentence:

The only source of light was a small, ??? fire, they knew that it wouldn’t take long and they’d find themselves in absolute darkness.

I just can’t find it.
