The person of the nonfinite verb is often inferable, as the subject (if any) should be the same as for the main verb: Hunting snipe, I shot a fisherman. The implied (and inferred) subject of hunting is I.

However, nonfinite verbs do indeed exhibit no tense (by definition)-- Hunting could be any time:

Hunting snipe, I will shoot a fisherman.
Hunting snipe, I have never shot a fisherman.

Here are the three forms of nonfinite verb and their rough finite equivalents:

I enjoy hunting snipe. / I hunt snipe for enjoyment; Snipe are hunted for enjoyment.
Hunted for fun, snipe are wary. / Snipe are wary because they are hunted for fun.
I went to Ukishima to hunt snipe. / I hunted snipe in Ukishima.
