Actually i haven't got the hint in Philip's question. I just think that (A) is wrong in grammar.

If your concern is the use of is with humans, that isn't the mistake. Is is the proper verb form to go with the subject one (of the most distinctive features...). Can you see something wrong with answer (C)? Remember: not all mistakes concern grammar.

Right! I'm not sure about your native language, but in some (especially the Romance Languages), their is a single verb (faire, fare, hacer) that translates as do or make, depending on the verb, in English. In fact, those verbs are often used in expressions that use something altogether different in English [ weather expressions, for example ]. It can get confusing, indeed.
