Be sure that the victory you're going for is one that actually holds meaning for you personally or professionally. Otherwise all of that effort might be for naught. For example, an English literature major in college needs a math credit and is enrolled in a calculus class. She discovers the course is impossible, so she opts to drop it in favor of a simpler math class because, at the end of the day, all she needs is any math credit. It may be smarter to quit that more difficult course.

Actually, this phrase is the subtitle of this paragraph in an article. The word 'ends' remind me the phrase 'make both ends meet'. I don't know if they are the same. Could you explain the sentence?

Hello, sir. I have thought about the phrase for a while. I think 'the end justify the means' is easy to understand but I find that I can't comprehend in the context if I try to understand it in a negative form, especially I found the Chinese interpretation is "the loss outweighs the gain". The idea here is to say that the calculus class may be too difficult for her , thus preventing her from ever obtaining a degree in English literature, so the gain would practically be zero ( or arguably very small considering that she will certainly learn something at col
