Find that it was vs find it

Hi all,

But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she hardly had a good feautre in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes.

Could I remove the underlined was without changing the meaning at all?

Thanks in advance.

But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she hardly had a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes.

The clause in question is the direct object of "find"

it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark

Thanks so much! I am still a little unsure.
I guess what I wanted to ask essentially boils down to the differences between these two constructions -
1. I find this book interesting.
2. I find that this book is interesting.
- but with the present participles replaced by past particles.
So perhaps something like:
1. I found myself unwelcomed by his family.
2. I found that
