find my bearings

Hi,

Is 'find my bearings' common and could it be used in the example below?

Let's say that I'm showing someone which way they need to go to get to the nearest restaurant.

"You need to go to the end of the street, turn right and then go past the supermarket. There's a big white building on the left. It'll help you find your bearings if you get lost."

Thank you.
