Find his own way

Sorry for making a new thread for this but thought maybe my question won't be noticed in the original post. Anyway, is it fine to say:

Jeremy's father abandonned him to find his own way (what I mean by find his own way is that Jeremy's father didn't offer him any guiding intructions regarding his life)?? if it sounds strange, could you please give me a substitute, thank you in advance.

Hi, It's fine, except that I would say explicitly 'to find his own way in life' . There are other ways to use the phrase, eg he might have left him 'to find his own way home' . Clive

Hi,

It's fine, except that I would say explicitly 'to find his own way in life'.

There are other ways to use the phrase, eg he might have left him 'to find his own way home'.
