find error

as i knw in two combined sentences, both sentences can't be in past tense.. is it correct? for example-
" I went there because he called me". is it correct or has any error? plz help

" I went there because he called me". This sentence is fine. There is no error.
" I went there because he told me to".

Several clauses in a sentence with past tense verbs is very common. It is not an error.
I ate some curry while / and / but my friend drank some tea.
