What is the difference between the two nouns? Or when is semi-finals used and when semi-final?

When there's only a single match in the final stage of a competition, I think it should be final . When there are several matches in the final stage, I think it should be finals . But usage is mixed-up.

Semi-finals is plural because there are four teams participating in two matches. Then, as Marius said, it depends on how many games are in the final/s - right now the NBA finals are going on - it's a best-of-seven set up so the finals are plural. But if only would game would determine the winner, then it would be the final.
