final exam or final exams

A midterm or final exam is about one subject, for example, physics. Midterm or final exams are about more than one subject, for example, physics and mathematics. Is that right?

That's right, Teo. When you talk about your 'final exam s ', you are referring to more than one test, and that is generally a reference to a group of final tests -- one test for each subject.

Thank you very much. May I ask you one more question?

In Taiwan, all the students who want to enter a senior high school must pass The Basic Competence Test, which includes five subjects: Chinese, English, mathematics, science, and social studies. So The Basic Competence Test should be called entrance exams, not an entrance exam. Am I right?

Hi Teo

Well, that might be seen as one large test which consists of several smaller parts. So calling it "an entrance exam" is OK -- especially if the entire test is done in one sitting and/or the composite score (one overall score rather than individual scores on the various parts) is what determines whether or not you are granted admission.
