Hi
What does 'final end' mean in:
In parts of the Mediterranean, such as Greece, after a few years mourners exhume the dry remains in a ritual of religious and personal significance, and possibly also of social significance, marking the final end of mourning

It's redundant to say 'final end'. By definition an end is final. It might have been better for the writer to use something like "official end" instead.

Yes. There may be several steps to any procedure, and each step would be considered to have its own end. The the "final end" would be the end of the last step of the procedure. I think this is what the writer intended to say.
