Fill in with a correct modal verb

I don't understand why the underlined modal verb 'could' is not possible here. The answer key says 'might' instead.

Carla: Does your daughter still swim a lot?
Linda: Yes, she's in the college team, and she's not sure but she could be competing in the national championships next month.
