Is this sentence correct:



"The man was apparently killed, but the case was filed as the police couldn't get enough evidence that led to its perpetrator."



Note: By 'file', I mean the police put the case aside, because had no longer any leads to work with.

All I know about this is what I've learned by watching cop shows on TV, but I think "filed" is the opposite of what you want. The case was closed or it was shelved, declared unsolved, put on the back burner, left open.
