File directory, directory of a file, file's directory???

Hi there!

Please help me with this. I believe it's very simple but it's confusing to me. I was writing on some forum a post and came to a point when I didn't know how to write something. The sentence goes something like this:

"This line is used for displaying file directory." Is it correct or it should be:
"This line is used for displaying directory of a file.", or maybe:
"This line is used for displaying file's directory." ???

It refers to directory where's that file.
It is very confusing to me. I don't know the difference. Can you explain me the difference, point me to some exercises. I even don't know how it's called.

Sorry for articles, I'm learning them too. It takes time to understand them. Feel free to correct them.

Thanks in advance!

This line is used for displaying [ the / a ] file directory. That is the usual way to say it. If you are just beginning to learn English, use the 's only with a person.

Just one further thing. In English we don't put anything between the verb and its object. So writing a post has to come together as a unit before you add on some forum.

Thanks CJ, you're so much of a help.
So, there's no some rule how to use of-constructed sentences?

I'm not a beginner in English. Some parts of English I know better, some not, some don't know at all. I know that 's means a possession, but I read that someone used that (non-native speaker) and that confused me.

Thanks again.

No. No rule. We native speakers are in the same situation as you. We just repeat the forms that we hear other people use and the forms we see in writing. Our advantage is that we hear and read these expressions every day, so they stick in
