Fighter with or against smth (fire fighter, freedom fighter)

I am confused ...

when I write "something fighter" - what does it mean?
For example,
"fire fighter" is a fighte? against fire
"freedom fighter" is a fighter for (not against) freedom

Now, when I tell "spam fighter" or "spam warrior",
does it mean fighter pro/for or contra/against a spam?

How should I decipher the meaning of other "something fighter" s?
