fight / fight with / fight against somebody

Hello,

could you please explain the difference between fight / fight with / fight against somebody?

If this is too general question then let's have a look at these sentences:

1) John fights Mike for the gold medal.
2) John fights with Mike for the gold medal.
3) John fights against Mike for the gold medal.

a) Are all sentences above correct?
b) What is the difference between them?
c) Can 2) be interpreted that they are together in one team and fight with others?

By way of digression let me proudly say that today I have exceeded the number of 1000 sentences in my program Emotion: smile
