I've conducted a research in the minor [field / discipline].

I often see "discipline" used to mean an academic field.
In which case are they interchangeable and which case not?

"Field" is generally used in a college context - never in a secondary school context - for example:

"He's an expert in this field." ("Discipline" would not be used here.)

"There's high demand for Ph.D.'s in this field." ("Discipline" is possible if you're trying to sound very academic.)
