Few years later

Few years later, the Romans advanced even northwards and constructed the Antonine Wall. However, beacuse of harsh living conditions, this one was abandonned 40 years later.

Can I use "later" like this? Is there any possibility how to avoid repetition, e.g "this one was abandonned after 40 years of using"?

Thank you for your help.
