I haven't read this book by Nick Hornby. Can anyone explain the meaning of the title to me?

...and isn't it about a football loving bloke...hence pun on pitch.

nona, there is also a recent move called Fever Pitchwhich is not about a "football loving bloke" but a "baseball loving fellow" in which case the pun will be on a different kind of pitch.

If that's the meaning, shouldn't it be pitch fever instead? That's what I don't understand.
Does pitch mean anything else apart from the area where football is played?

The word 'pitch has many different meanings:

1. In Fever Pitch: It means level as in high and low pitch in music. So fever pitch means high level or boiling level (of excitement).

2. Pitch also means the football pitch or the playing field.

3. Pitch also means to throw as in baseball when the pitcher pitches to the hitter.
