Fetch vs bring

Could anybody explain the difference between those two words ?

Both mean the same thing but "fetch" is not used in American English - except for this example. When someone throws a ball or a stick or other object and wants ther dog to get it and bring it back they will yell "fetch" as they throw the object. That is common.
