Festivals

I have a couple of questions, I wonder if any expert could help me:

I heard somebody describing an event saying:

1)I took part in the XXXX festival, it was at the YYY theatre. In this festival there were lots of singers who challenged themselves to win a prize. The artist who has sung a song which is judged the best wins the prize.

the person speaking has a fair knowledge of English (pre-intermediate), the stream of thought makes sense but I do not think it is entirely correct.
How/What would you modify?

I am not sure how to use the verbs to watch/to see with regard to
an exhibition, a concert, a (street) theatre performance, a movie...
I know that I cannot use them interchangeably but I don't know what is the right collocation and why we choose one over the other...
any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Diotima, I would use I went to the festival unless I was actually performing at the festival. The artists are judged, and whoever gives the best performance wins a prize. 1.

If the artists are judged (e.g. a contest) is it correct to say ' they challenge th
