Fence around their stuff, and information siloes

Could you help me make sense of it?

What we’re seeing increasing is information siloes, and we see that across news organisations, we see that across cultural heritage organisations, that people build fences around their stuff.

What I understand now is that they are seeing information siloes across news organisations and other sites, but what is fence around their stuff? And how people see information siloes in news organisations?

Silos are used for storing grain. There are often several silos standing side by side. Nothing in one silo can be seen by anything in another silo.

  • So by extension, the word 'silo' is also used to mean places in a company or corporation where information can be stored so that it is not seen by other companies or corporations.
  • This is similar to putting a fence around the data known to that business.
