I asked my mainland Chinese students about this. One of them told me that, even with Chinese names, she can't tell which are male and which are female. Of course, she may have been teasing me!

Some names are unisex, of course. Just think of the name 'Jamie'. Besides, who says a person's first name should reveal their gender? This is a cultural thing.
