Felt pity and gave him...

Can I say,

(a) John saw an old man.He felt pity and gave him some food.

(b) John saw an old man.He felt pity for him and gave him some food.

(c) John saw an old man.He felt pity for him. The old man did not have any food to eat, so he begged John to have some food.

Hello Vince, A and B are fine; though "felt pity" is a little literary. In ordinary English, in B, for instance, you would be more likely to say "felt sorry for him". "To have" is not quite right, in C.

A and B are fine; though "felt pity" is a little literary. In ordinary English, in B, for instance, you would be more likely to say "felt sorry for him".
