Felt 'like'?

Is it correct to say "I felt like I played well", as opposed to "I felt that I played well".

You could say either, Guest. I think I would prefer to write, 'I felt that..'.

I agree with MM that the second is preferable.

If you go with the first, then for formal writing you should write that sentence as either:

a) I felt as if I played well.

or

b) I felt as though I played well.

As already mentioned, "that" is preferable to "like". "as if" and "as though" are also used in this context.

Be aware, however, that -- because this is an area in English grammar where people are frequently unsure of a good way to express the thought -- people will come up with all sorts of crazy combinations which should not be imitated!

I felt like if I played well.
