a) His pet felt sick. We don't normally speak of our pets as 'feeling' things, perhaps because they are unable to express their feelings clearly. We might say 'He thought his pet was sick'.

(b) His pet fell sick / falls sick. 'To fall sick' is a very formal and literary way of speaking. More common would be som

Can I say,

(a) His pet was sick. Yes.

(b) His pet fell sick. (is that formal? acceptable?) You can say it. But it sounds much, much too formal, particularly when you are just talking about a pet. I never even say 'My wife fell sick'. I just say 'She got sick'.
