fell down, running towards

Yesterday some belongings which I kept in the car boot, was fell down while the car was in running towards a hotel. We don't know about it until we back home. Almost the loss cost $5,000.

Can I use, "we/I didn't know about it" instead of "We didn't discover it"?

'Know about it' is not a good choice here; 'find out about it' would be much better.
