Feeling unwelcome/in the way

Hi

The author says that the probable causes of a certain disease are: Family friction and arguments. Child feeling unwelcome, in the way.

I take it to mean that I feel that the child (who is probably on the way) is unwelcome. But I'm not sure what "in the way" means? Obstacle?

Top answer

I f someone feels that he or she is 'in the way', it means that he feels like he is an obstruction, either literally or figuratively. He feels unwanted. Clive

One more question: Child feeling unwelcome means that I feel that the child is unwelcome and not that the child feels that he/she is unwelcome?

You wrote: He feels unwanted. I take it to mean that I feel that the child is unwanted and not that the child feels he/she is unwanted.

I just want to make sure that I understand this construction correctly.
