I'm racking my brains to understand why something is wrong or not, given these three sentences below.
1. I feel sad for his death.
2. I feel sad for what they did to you.
3. I feel sad for your loss.
I've asked native speakers to simply get answers on whether they're correct or not.
The results are that most of them agree that 1 is wrong while 2 and 3 are correct, but I have no idea why.
Could you explain why?
I wouldn't say that those are wrong. But we much more often say it some other way, eg 'I feel sad about his death. In other words, sad about is more idiomatic than sad fo r.
