Feel + N/ADJ

1) Thomas felt relief when he heard that he has passed the exam.

2) Thomas felt relieved when he heard that he has passed the exam.

Can anyone please tell me which one is better or more natural, and why?

'Cause it looks like the verb "feel" can be followed by either a noun or an adjective.

Thank you very much indeed.

Yes, as a rule noun phrase structures tend to be more formal, though the difference may be minimal.
