You have to use the past tense, because it happened

My take...

Past tense or present depends on the context. If one is feeling ashamed because of something he has found out about his past, like his family was involved in drug trade, present should be the right tense. If we talk about his feeling in the past, then by all means, past tense is used.

Also when you say "I feel so ashamed when I ....." , "
