Grammar

'feel'

Hi all,

I'm just wondering which of the following is the phrase that best completes the sentence.

Richard Jewell's mother felt Richard __________ before he even went to bed.

(A) convicted by the media

(B) was convicted by the media

(C) had convicted the media

(D) convicted the media

Thank you for your answer in advance!!

B and C are grammatically possible but have opposite meanings, depending on who was doing the convicting. Given the identity of Richard Jewell, I'd say it has to be B.

And I'm just wondering which one you would choose. Only one is not grammatically possible.

Basically I think that (B) would be the "best" answer. Do you think that (C) and (D) are possible in terms of grammar? What about (A) - "'Richard Jewell's mother felt Richard convicted by the media before he even went to trial" ? Is this sentence gramamtical?

The problem with this question is that it demands knowledge of the incident, not grammar knowledge: the reader must know who Richard Jewell is in order to answer correctly, because C and D are just as grammatically correct and semantically possible as B.

I thought at first that A was not grammatically possible, that 'felt convicted' was too truncated– but perhaps not. It sounds better

Thank you for your answer. If A is grammatical, what about these two sentences?

"She felt him convicted by the media" vs. "He felf himself convicted by the media"

Does the first sentence have the same mearning as " She felt he was convicted by the media" ?

Thank you!!
