The diagram illustrates expectations about how many students will study three dominant languages over the ten-year period from 2020 to 2030.

Overall, what stands out from the graph is there will be a stable upward trend in the number who study English, Spanish or Mandarin in company with globalization. By 2028, the number of students of Mandarin will have overtaken students of Spanish and will be the second major language in the world.

Looking at the details, English learners are expected to drop suddenly by 2026 before it will have rocketed in the years from 2026 to 2030. The number of students in Mandarin and Spanish will have risen gradually simultaneously to over 300 million by 2026.

Projections show that the number of students of English is set to reach over 700 million, which will reach the peak of the student during the whole period and be the most widely spoken language in the world. After that, there is predicted to be a remarkable growth of Spanish from the lowest point 100 million compared with the others to its highest number of students, 400 million by 2030.
