Learning English at school is often seen as more important than learning local languages. If these are not taught, many are at risk of dying out. In your opinion, is it important for everyone to learn English? Should we try to ensure the survival of local languages and, if so, how?
English has now become a dominant language that is spoken by a majority of people all over the world. Therefore, indigenous language are at danger of dissapearing as more and more people are learning English and forget about them. In my view, although learning English is undoubtedly crucial, we should also preserve local languages as well.
Learning English is important for many reasons. First, it provide opportunities for people who wish to work or study overseas. If students can learn and become fluent in English, it will open the gate to prestigious universities and for them and they will be able to participate in a much better environment. Moreover, English is also a means to communicate with people worldwide. By using English, we can understand each other better and thererfore, learn about each other's knowledge and culture.
Besides, we should also take steps to protect endangered languages since they are indispensable parts of cultures. If a language dissappeared, the culture associated with this language would also collapse and the cultural diversity will be heavily affected. One solution to prevent this is to create a documentation which records everything about endangered languages such as their vocabulary or syntax,... This way, the languages will be preserved even when nobody speak them anymore and the record will be very useful for new speakers who want to learn about them. Another effective way is to promote local languages by utilizing social medias. Native speakers can use social platforms such as Youtube or Facebook to upload courses and share about their languages. By doing this, the languages will get more recognition and it will increase the chance that more people will be interested in learning them.
To sum up, even though it is extremely vital for everyone to learn English, I believe that we also need to keep local languages alive by recording into a documentation or using social medias to promote them.
