Would you please help me with these two sentences?

The corn fed people for centuries. Is this correct or do we have to use past continuous?
I fed my dog for twenty minutes. Is this correct? I think that it would be better to say I was feeding my dog for 20 minutes or It took me 20 minutes to feed my dog. Am I right or is past simple also correct in this case?
