If I use "fearul", will this sentence be not right?

"A fearful/fearsome railway accident happened 3 days ago."

'Fearful/fearsome' in the sense of terrible are uncommon, although correct, words. More common would be


"A terrible railway accident happened 3 days

I know that it is better to use "terrible" but I have to choose either fearful or fearsome.

Which one is better?
