Favourite

My favourite sport is cricket.
Is the adjective "favourite" always in the superlative form ?
Can we use expressions like "most favourite" and "least favourite" in formal speech ?

Top answer

I would use them in Formal speech. Favourite should be the one you like best. Most favourite is really repetition.

American Heritage offers a second definition that indicates it is inherently a superlative. Most Americans go with the first definition of "one that enjoys special favor or regard." This is good for Maria in The Sound of Music as she sings. "These are some of my favorite things."

I agree that "most favorite" sounds odd, but I sometimes use "all-time favorite".

Hi,

I also hear 'least favourite'. - I like it, but I like a lot of other similar things more.

eg 'Chocolate is my least favourite ice-cream'.
